Save a life with a call
If you know someone who is involved in gun or knife crime, call CRIMESTOPPERS anonymously on 0800 555111 or report online. No one will ask your name and you could get a reward and or save someone's life.
By calling, you could stop someone getting killed.
In some areas where young people grow up, it can be seen as cool to carry a knife. Some people think it is a way to get respect or protect yourself. But many young people are carrying knives without thinking of the consequences, which can include being scarred for life, maimed or even killed.
If you don't take it with you, the knife won't get used.
Knives and the law
The Police will search you if they think you are carrying a knife. They can also come into your school and search you there. Teachers can search you if they think you have a knife on you at school. It is no good saying that you had the knife for your own protection… it is illegal to carry a knife and you could be arrested.
For just carrying a knife you could end up in court. A criminal record will affect the rest of your life. The maximum prison sentence for possession of a knife is 4 years, but, if it is used in a crime or to injure someone, the penalties are much worse.
knives
It is illegal to:
- sell a knife of any kind to anyone under 18 years old (16 to 18 year olds in Scotland can buy cutlery and kitchen knives)
- carry a knife in public without good reason - unless it’s a knife with a folding blade 3 inches long (7.62 cm) or less, eg a Swiss Army knife
- carry, buy or sell any type of banned knife
- use any knife in a threatening way (even a legal knife, such as a Swiss Army knife)
Lock knives (knives with blades that can be locked when unfolded) are not folding knives, and are illegal to carry in public without good reason.

Guns
Carrying ... It's Not a Game.
In some areas where young people grow up, it can be seen as cool to carry a Gun. Some people think it is a way to get respect or protect yourself. But many young people are carrying weapons without thinking of the consequences, which can include being scarred for life, maimed or even killed.
When you carry a Gun you put yourself in danger
Think about it… if you are carrying a Gun and you get into an argument, you are more likely to use it. The Gun you have brought to look after yourself could get you into more trouble. Before you know it, you have used it or the Gun has been taken off you and used against you.
If you don't take it with you, the Gun won't get used.
Guns and the law
The Police will shoot if you appear to be carrying a gun and you do not comply with their instruction
