Becoming a Police Cadet

Aged 13 to 17? Then this is your chance to support the community and gain an exciting insight into Dorset Policing.

Provides a safe environment

Becoming a Dorset Volunteer Police Cadet doesn’t automatically provide a route into becoming a police officer but provides a safe environment where young people can develop positive relationships with the police, actively support the community and challenge yourself to learn and develop lifelong skills. Importantly, it enables Dorset Police to understand issues from a young person’s perspective.

Policing and Community

As a Volunteer Police Cadet you’ll be issued with a uniform and attend weekly sessions lasting two hours in the evenings.  You’ll learn about a wide range of policing and community-related topics, such as:

  • Local Policing Priorities by working closely with Neighbourhood Policing teams
  • Our specialist units such as dog handlers and armed response teams
  • Team building and interpersonal skills
  • Drill
  • Visit and learn about other emergency services that work in partnership with the police
  • Police procedures such as taking statements and using pocket note books

As well as these weekly sessions, you’ll also assist police officers, Police Community Support Officers and other police staff at a variety of community events, promoting crime prevention initiatives and be ambassadors for Dorset Police at official events such as Remembrance Sunday.

Progression

You will progress though a syllabus from Recruit Cadet to Senior or even possibly Head Cadet with the opportunity to apply to become a Volunteer Cadet Leader at 18.

As you become more senior within the unit, you will be supported to take on additional responsibilities such as mentoring new recruits, running drill and team-building sessions and developing ideas for Cadet deployments within the community.

We aim

We aim for Dorset Police Cadets to reflect the Dorset Police EDI strategy , where everyone is respected, represented, included and protected.

Cadets offers a safe space to our Young People.
